That Feeling In Your Tear Ducts

It seems that the days of floating through time without direction  with too many directions are temporarily behind me. Of course, I am my same old self – only now with a bright and shiny regiment! Between school and work there isn’t too much time to let my brain go scrambled eggs.

But tonight, with a little bit of free time and a computer, I found myself latching on to a consistent distraction in my life: the youtube history. All I have to do is type ‘youtube’ into my history bank and – BOOM – the last two years of my distracted life are on display. Sure, I call it distracting, but there is a type of elegance to traveling back through time to see what you were watching months and years back. Perhaps this is unique to me, but I often find myself very moved by videos. I think they have the propensity to pack massive amounts of culture and human feeling into nice little bite-size packages.

I look back through the history and there are so many different videos – some I don’t ever remember watching, others create a nice little ‘remember that?’ moment, and then there are big fish. Big fish are videos that cause an absolute bombardment of nostalgia that I can feel so vehemently in my tear ducts. These videos send me sprawling through time right back to where I was and what I was experiencing when that video first lit something within me.

It is wonderful. Nostalgia is a fantastic experience. When I’m alone in my room, these big hits of feeling are the only thing that get me to stop talking to myself. It is wonderful. 


I am also hopelessly addicted to athletic motivational videos. I can’t tell you how many times I have viewed these at two in the morning and been motivated to set the alarm for seven (I still sleep through it). The last two posts are two of my favorites.

The Mistakes We Knew We Were Making


If there is one person who will actually be late to their own funeral, it’s me. My entire life I have been consistently tardy to every endeavor that I’ve undertaken: elementary school, high school, college classes, jobs, volunteering, practices, movies, parties. All late, late, late. This record of late spans almost every type of activity and start time – I’m worse when it’s in the morning, but no matter when the event is I’ll probably be late to it.

I once heard a theory about the consistently late – they are so insecure about their competence that they must get one more thing done before they leave as a way of feeling more legitimate. When I first heard this I thought “no way, that’s not me,”. Then I realized that this was very applicable to my life. It makes me feel much more important to delay getting ready for things. And so I continue what I’m doing until the last minute. Normally the problem is that I underestimate how long it takes to get everything I need for the activity and this causes me to end up leaving super late.

I should add that I am not the type of person who accepts they will always be late and isn’t mad when they arrive with emphasis on the ‘ish’. When I am late, the entire ride there consists of being mad at myself – the entire ride is dwelling on what those waiting for me must be thinking. I hate that feeling, I really do. And yet, I am consistently late with few signs that it’s going to get any better.

Last week I worked at a local children’s day camp. It was an awesome experience – the kids were full of energy but cooperative, the activities were fun for everybody, I got to do the work with a friend of mine, and, on top of it all, I got paid to be there. It was fantastic: I literally got paid to have fun.

You would think, then, that I would show up on time because it was so enjoyable? Nope. Not a chance. The first day I was a full two hours late. Everyday after that I was at least ten minutes late. And so the cycle continues.

Prioritizing is probably the simple solution I would get from an elder or other person with wisdom. I think, however, it goes a lot deeper than that. Specifically I believe it comes from a deep-seated love of feeling impossibly busy. I love being so busy that I almost go insane. It makes me feel oh so important. I love running the mindsprint. It’s a strange feeling to enjoy, but that’s how I am.

So, if my theory is correct, to become more punctual I must realize that the only feeling I love more than being impossibly busy is the feeling that I really accomplished a goal. Therefore, I must ‘slow my roll’ a bit and try to be more focused on the present. As they always say: “Life is a marathon, not a sprint,”. I think I have to ditch some of the idealism and be more realistic; I have to try jogging not sprinting through life.

One of the mornings at the day camp they took a group picture. It’s a nice picture, everyone looks happy in their matching Tye-die t-shirts. Only I’m not in it, because I was late that day. I think that I am going to keep that picture for a while, because I feel like it represents everything I miss when I’m late. I’m going to make that picture a symbol of my past, and hopefully, an impetus to get out of bed in the morning. I want to hold that photo in a year and wonder why I’m not in it. Maybe then I’ll remember why and say “wow, remember when I was late to everything? I’m sure glad I’m not like that anymore.”

Or maybe I’m just being idealistic.

Hello and Welcome!

You’re probably wondering what this blog is about. Well, at the risk of oversimplification, this is an attempt to connect with people living with ADHD and ADD. Ultimately, I would love for this site to become a hub for the ADD & ADHD community. With that in mind, I should say that my preliminary dream is for this blog to take on a democratic life of its own; But for now, with no community to speak of, I must shamelessly talk about myself.

I have never been formally diagnosed with either ADD or ADHD. For my entire life (I am now closing in on my 20s) I have exhibited what I perceive as many symptoms of both conditions: I constantly misplace items, I have trouble focusing on tasks for very long, I hate to be stagnant for certain periods of time, I have trouble completing tasks or personal goals, repetitive thoughts, trouble sleeping due to not being able to shut out stimuli, etc. In addition, there seems to be a family history of both conditions.

I have been told by many people that I likely have these conditions, and have taken a reliable online test on the matter that supported these claims.

While I somewhat noticed my tendencies throughout grade school there was no real arena where I was so challenged that I had to stand up to my symptoms. And so I coasted carelessly with my peers. It was not until high school that I was forced to begin the process of reining in my lack of focus and seemingly un-corkable fountain of energy. I attended a relatively rigorous private Jesuit high school and the demands of the academia forced me to begin to change my habits.

I struggled to balance studying and extracurricular activities as my life started to emit the aura of hectic rushing that now seems to permeate my day-to-day. To make a long story short, I slowly learned new techniques to accomplish goals despite my lack of a long attention span and other downsides. I joined the track and cross country teams so that I was running essentially year round – this did away with a great deal of my excessive energy. Essentially I learned to achieve tangible goals and built a high school career that I am very proud of.

Now, as I enter my second year of college, I have begun to realize that my symptoms seem to define many aspects of my personality and aspirations. I do, however, still feel that my core values and beliefs hold the most influence over my life. Nonetheless, my high motor, tendency to sprint from idea to idea, and other manifestations play a large role in my life.

And so, my personal spiel comes to an end. Again, I do not wish for this site to be about me and my experiences with ADD & ADHD primarily, but rather wish it to be some kind of a community dialogue for those like me. I also wish to document those parts of my life that I feel are very related to what I and others close to me perceive as my condition.

I plan to produce many posts that are relevant to our community: adding to the commentary on ADD & ADHD as written by those who live with the conditions is the main goal for this blog. Of course, this goal implies a community. If you have anything that you feel is relevant in any way to the topics of the blog please don’t hesitate to participate (or go off topic, for that matter). I would love for this to reach many people who can relate to my own and others experiences and therefore if you have any form of ADD &/or ADHD or love someone who does please participate.

I should add that I am in no way an expert on these conditions – I am quite fallible and if I mess up or you disagree with anything I put out there, please call me out on it.
